Will my young adult earn a paid job from your program?
We do have students that are hired by the companies they worked at during their Work Based Learning experience. Most often these students have "worked" for the company for a year or more and demonstrated the skills of an outstanding employee.
For most young adults, the process will be as follows. When it is decided the young adult is entering their last year of the program, which may be before age 26, a referral will be made to Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS). Michigan Rehabilitation Services will review their case and make a referral for them to A) continue with the MRS process or B) refer them back to the community agency they work with either Macomb Oakland Regional Center (MORC) or Community Living Services (CLS).
If the young adult continues through the MRS process a two week job assessment with a job coach will be scheduled. After that experience the school, family and MRS team will meet. MRS will read their report and make a recommendation for one of the following:
- The young adult is ready for Competitive Employment (no job coach after initial training)
- The young adult should go through a another two week assessment.
- The young adult would be better supported through MORC or CLS for supported employment (continued support with job coach in a small team).
If the young adult is referred to MORC or CLS for employment services. The following may occur..
- The MORC/CLS caseworker will work with MRS to develop a supported employment plan (continued support with job coach in a small team).
- The young adult may be set up to volunteer in the community as opposed to work placement.
With any questions, please ask your MORC/CLS caseworker or your students teacher.
